Prioritizing Our Time

http://www.freedigitalphotos.net   -renjith krishnan
The other day, I wrote a post mentioning that we were doing a terrible job at prioritizing our time.  We really needed a family calendar.

Google

For a few years, I had been keeping the family calendar on Google .  I liked this for a couple of reasons.

Phone App- Google Calendar can send alerts to your phone and you can enter new events from your phone.

Link multiple calendars- I could link my calendars with MrLivingOurWay's calendars and we'd always be aware of what's going on.

This option served it's purpose but I was on the only one looking at it.

Cozi
In the midst of trying to get our house organized, I discovered the Cozi Calendar.  This has been working for a month or so.  Here are some of the pros of this method.

Phone App- This calendar also has a phone app. I downloaded it to both of our phones and our Kindle Fire's so that Cupcake can use it as well.

Family Password-There is one password for the whole family. The only other thing you need to remember is your e-mail address.  This way no one is forgetting their password and having to login through someone else's account.
Menu Planner-    We can store our favorite recipes in Cozi on the web site and then just drag and drop them into a calendar (unfortunately this is a separate calendar) for the day we want to have them.  This has made meal planning super easy.  Since all the recipes and the plan are on the same web site, which ever adult has the time to cook dinner understand the plan and the recipe.

Shopping List-We can access this list from our cell phones and Kindles as I mentioned before.  Cupcake loves adding things to the list as her Dad is on the way to the store for us. I just had a little problem once as I was reviewing the list and found a Hershey bar listed.  It hasn't happened since.

Join Lists-  We can have to do lists which are shared.  I've made some house cleaning lists to make it easier for MrLivingOurWay and the kids to help after the new baby comes.  We can each have our own to do lists.  I can add things to the list for MrLivingOurWay to do.  There are some things I don't feel comfortable with any more such as lugging big boxes of out grown clothes to the attic and it cuts down on the nagging that must be done in order for him to actually take care of this.

For whatever reason, MrLivingOurWay is actually using Cozi so we are going to stick with this one for now.

Of course in addition to utilizing a common calendar, we've had to waste less time as well.  Less TV is watched and more productive things are done.

What sort of calendar or time organization system do you use?

  1. We just use an old fashioned calendar hanging on the refrigerator. In the past I've had as many as three paper calendars (purse, desk, and wall), which was a mess. It was impossible to keep them all synchronized, and invariably something would be forgotten. With one big calendar front and center, we do much better.

The application you mention sounds really cool. However, I am the only one with a "smart" phone, and my husband only gets on the computer for about an hour a day in the evenings. In addition, I am probably ditching the "smart" phone when it dies in favor of a simpler, less expensive model. I have not been happy with the planned obsolescence I've observed with not only my phone, an Android, but also with my friend's iPhones.
