I don't know if you can tell by the picture or not, but there was a lot to to clean up and cut down after
the fire we set the other day. Today, we went out and cut down everything that was still standing. MrLivingOurWay used the chain saw and I used the weed eater. Believe it or not, a weed eater will cut down some small trees. It was hot and we went in the house several times for water. Slowly but surely, this small area will become a small field soon.
It has been a lot of work though so next time, I'm recommending goats and pigs!
Have you turned wooded acreage into farmland? What are you experiences?
Goats and pigs definitely give you a head start! We cleared some of our land, but not a whole lot, as we wanted to leave our "faerie sanctuary" somewhat intact. We have a huge project in the immediate future, as we are going to get our milking goats as soon as we can!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm thinking goats and pigs instead of a big burning if possible. I did not enjoy the stress of the fire department showing up even though everything turned out fine :)
DeleteIt was a hot humid day yesterday and I was only building fence, not using a saw. I don't know how much animals would do to clearing an area, I would use a tractor and try to pull up the small trees by the roots. I did a couple small ones the other day and it was a lot of work but when I had goats, they just killed the trees and I was still stuck with standing dead trees.
ReplyDeleteWell there aren't any big tree on this property. The ideas is that the goats will eat the small stuff and the pigs will root up the stumps. It out to save a little work anyway.
