Country Entertainment for Kids

I remember when I was a child, several of the neighborhood kids were kept by the same babysitter. We entertained ourselves in lots of interesting ways. I remember making "tree houses" in the woods which involved putting down a carpet of moss, raking away the leaves to create a yard, outlining the yard in some large sticks, and some of the kids even put artificial flowers in their tree for decoration. We made a whole tree neighborhood back there.  We made "dolls" out of flowers by taking one flower and slipping the flower portion of other flowers over the first one to create a layered skirt.  There was a game we played with rocks that I couldn't remember how to play now to save my life.  One of the best games was "apple ball".  Someone pitched us an apple and we'd hit it with a stick.  The game was played very much like baseball but if the apple busted, it was considered a home run.  All went well with "apple ball" as long as the apples weren't usable by our babysitter for her infamous apple puffs (which sold out every year at our town festival).

My kids reminded me of all those great memories this past weekend as they proceed to have a watermelon rind fight in the front yard after they'd finished their watermelon.  They had a great time and I figured that clothes would come clean.

What sorts of fun did you or your kids have in the country recently?
